Gen.G’s Victory Leaves LPL Fans “Worried”
On April 2nd, the LCK 2025 Regular Season officially kicked off with a highly anticipated matchup between HLE and Gen.G. As the reigning champions of the LCK Cup and First Stand 2025, HLE was considered the favorite before the match. However, Gen.G showcased an overwhelming strength in this game, convincingly defeating HLE with a score of 2-0.

Following this victory, fans could see that Gen.G had significantly improved compared to their previous performance in the LCK Cup. Alongside a brilliant Chovy shining in both games, the player once seen as a weakness, Duro, also delivered an outstanding performance. This allowed Gen.G to dominate the match and gave the audience the feeling that they could defeat any opponent.

This strong rise of Gen.G has left LPL fans feeling anxious, as they believe the gap between this region and the LCK is widening too much. The reason stems from the bitter elimination of TES at First Stand 2025, who are currently dominating the LPL. Meanwhile, the champions of this tournament suffered a humiliating defeat in their LCK debut against Gen.G.

Gen.G and LCK Promise to Leave LPL with More “Heartbreaks”
Since JDG won the MSI 2023, LPL representatives have been unable to reclaim glory for this region in international tournaments. From competing on par with LCK representatives, LPL teams can now be humiliated by lesser-known names from LEC and LTA. The defeat of TES at First Stand 2025 is a clear example of this as they were repeatedly defeated by less prestigious teams. The unfortunate part is that as soon as they returned to LPL, TES displayed their dominance once more, leaving fans losing faith in the strength of the tournament.

It’s important to note that the LPL currently has 16 teams participating, but only about 5-6 teams are strong and worth following. This results in the LPL season being very long, but the competitiveness in many matches is not high. Meanwhile, the LCK, with only 10 participating teams, also has 5-6 teams competing for the top spots, making the competition and quality of matches extremely high. As a result, the overall quality of the LPL tournament continues to decline while LCK teams are improving.

Therefore, it would not be surprising if LPL continues to be outperformed by LCK representatives in upcoming international tournaments like MSI or Worlds. Perhaps only a significant change in the organization of LPL tournaments could help this region escape its current “dire” situation and rise up with hopes of surpassing LCK in the future.
