Riot Games has recently unveiled a glimpse of a new project set to launch in patch 12.9. According to the reveal, the game publisher has outlined plans for this project since 2021. Specifically, these are the challenges created by Riot that players must complete significant milestones in missions to earn worthy rewards.
The lead designer for this project, Jordan “BarackProbama” Checkman, stated: “The challenges are designed to provide meaningful progress for all League of Legends players. Therefore, the Challenge system will serve all player types, from Casual, Ranked, and ARAM players, to those who just want to collect items.”

Notably, all players will receive the Challenge completely free of charge. Players can unlock progress by playing the game and completing specific missions. However, instead of being directly related to your rank or champion mastery level, these challenges encompass all game-related aspects.

The new system will include over 300 individual Challenges, 2700 tokens, and over 100 titles. There will be six categories of challenges you will experience, including various aspects related to in-game skills. These include:
– Imagination: Challenges focusing on objectives.
– Expertise: Related to champion proficiency and roles in lanes.
– Teamwork & Strategy: Centered on your support capabilities and teamwork.
– Veterancy: Challenges for veteran players.
– Collection: Challenges related to collecting loot such as champions, skins, or emblems in the game.
– Legacy: Time-limited challenges.
By completing Challenges, League of Legends players will receive rewards. They will earn progress towards badges with Achievement Points, which will be displayed on the player’s profile.

After upgrading the Challenges to a specific level, you will also earn new Titles that you can display on your profile. They will also appear in the loading screen and in your friends list.
This feature is expected to be updated and appear in patch 12.9 of League of Legends. However, with so many Challenges, a portion of players is concerned that this will “contribute” to ruining ranks. This is because some gamers may do anything to complete Challenges, even if the tasks do not fit the game match or playstyle. And at that point, it will truly be a disaster for teams with players diligently “grinding Challenges” in their lineup.
