On the evening of April 18 and the early morning of April 19 (Vietnam time), Riot released the latest images of the Illusory skin line. This is one of the most invested skin lines by Riot this year. Moreover, the champions featured in this skin line are mostly familiar names associated with current popular playstyles or are very famous. Notable mentions include champions like Yasuo, Yone, Udyr, and Master Yi, Kai’Sa.
However, due to the martial arts-inspired design, heavily influenced by Eastern aesthetics, the Illusory skin line is receiving mixed opinions. On one hand, some players appreciate the beauty of these skins. Nonetheless, since these skins have not yet appeared on the PBE, players are still questioning the effects that the skin line may bring, apart from the recall effect.
On the other side, many opinions suggest that Riot is repeating the mistakes of previously beautifully designed skin lines. Specifically, some champions have been designed in ways that lose their essence and easily cause confusion with other champions. The most prominent example is Kai’Sa. Some players admit they wouldn’t recognize this champion without her Void-themed shoulder pieces. Additionally, some even state that if you gave Kai’Sa an Illusory sword, she would look like Fiora.
Other champions causing controversy include Volibear and Yone. While Volibear is originally a god in bear form, this skin line has turned him into… a tiger. Meanwhile, Yone can only be recognized by his mask and dual swords. In the same skin line, despite Yone being the older brother, this champion appears significantly younger than Yasuo.
However, many players still acknowledge that despite the confusing designs, this skin line is highly anticipated. Perhaps, after they officially appear in the PBE, players will have a more comprehensive view before deciding whether to “open their wallets” for Riot.
