About 5 years ago, the 10th birthday event of Riot Games was truly a “blockbuster” for the gaming industry. At that time, Riot announced that it was developing many games across various genres, from FPS (VALORANT), card games (Legends of Runeterra) to fighting games (2XKO). In fact, Riot later realized its ambition to invade the mobile gaming market with the release of Wild Rift and Teamfight Tactics Mobile.

Not stopping there, Riot is also determined to build an open-world RPG (MMORPG) based on the League of Legends universe. This is truly a promising game as Riot has painstakingly built the League of Legends world over the past several years. For gamers, the chance to role-play beloved characters like Yasuo, Ahri, Akali… to explore Runeterra is indeed a dream come true.

However, Riot Games co-founder Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill recently brought some rather disappointing news regarding the League of Legends RPG. Specifically, on the night of March 20 (Vietnam time), the “big boss” of Riot announced that they had “torn down and rebuilt” this project. This also means that gamers will have to wait many more years before they can get their hands on this masterpiece.

“Completely refreshing the development direction of the League of Legends MMO project means that we will be going “into the dark” for a long time, possibly many years. This will help the team at Riot focus more on tackling the huge workload ahead. We understand the community’s excitement for the project but hope you will trust us during this upcoming period of “disappearance”.
Please understand that “no new information is a good thing” because that means we are working hard and putting our heart into realizing this project,” Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill shared on X.

Although it is a highly anticipated game, the production of the League of Legends MMO has faced many troubles. Just considering the position of the Production Team Leader, this game has gone through up to 3 different leaders in the past year. First, in March 2023, Riot’s Vice President and Lead of the League of Legends MMO project – Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street announced his departure from Riot Games for personal reasons.
This position was then handed over to another notable game developer, Vijay Thakkar. This leader had many years of experience working on games like Star Wars Galaxies and Age of Empires III. However, in the latest announcement from Riot, the position of Lead of the League of Legends MMO project has once again been transferred to Riot Faburisu, a former EA employee now joining Riot.

The constant leadership changes, most recently the “tearing down and rebuilding” of the development direction of the League of Legends MMO, have caused the development process of this game to be continually delayed. Based on the aforementioned shares from Riot’s “big boss”, there will be no new news about this game for many years to come. This has left the community feeling uneasy and fearing that this masterpiece from Riot may never become a reality.

Essentially, the League of Legends universe has all the elements such as a vast world, diverse characters, and interesting stories… These are excellent materials for Riot to build a successful MMO in the future. Hopefully, the refreshing development direction from Riot will be effective and help them realize this highly anticipated project in the future.
