Faker's actions may serve as a wake-up call to the harsh realities of Esports and League of Legends.

Currently, Faker’s recent incident may have temporarily quieted down as T1 fans continuously call for the cessation of sharing the video clip, and the owner of the footage has also deleted their post. Meanwhile, the audience is waiting for T1 and Faker to make statements after the incident to reassure fans. Of course, there has been much discussion surrounding Faker’s emotional outburst. But one thing cannot be denied: alongside his desire for victory, Faker’s actions also reveal a dark, harsh side of Esports and League of Legends.

From Faker’s Desire for Victory

Even if Faker loses the LCK Summer Championship 2024, or even fails to defend his World Championship title afterward, he remains the greatest player. This is indisputable, and no matter how future generations perform, Faker’s G.O.A.T status is unchanging. But for Faker, his desire for victory is always burning. The mid-laner of T1 always wants to conquer new milestones, winning as much as possible for T1. This is something his fans also hope for.

The Pressure from Himself and the Audience

T1 is the most accomplished team in the League of Legends scene, and Faker himself is the greatest player. However, this becomes a factor that subjects T1 to more pressure than any other team. In every tournament T1 participates in, they are forced to win if they don’t want to become the target of ridicule, criticism, and disdain. Even in defeats, the audience scrutinizes which team T1 lost to and which player deserves to be blamed. Although League of Legends is a 5-player game, there will always be individuals who take more heat than the others.

But that desire turned into pressure

In fact, during the time when Faker and all T1’s teams were DDoS attacked, many opinions suggested that Faker was just making excuses for his failures. Things calmed down only when T1 won the World Championship 2023. But clearly, many people forget one thing: Faker does not need to make excuses for any of his failures, as he is perhaps the player with the most wins and also the most losses in League of Legends today.

Unlike other sports, the interaction between Esports players, or in this case, League of Legends players, and the audience is much closer. Fans can interact directly with players, either in the arena or on streaming channels. Because of this, both positive and negative feedback can reach players directly without any filtering. Ultimately, the ones who bear all the negativity are the players.

Resulting in an Emotional Outburst

Self-harm syndrome is a mental disorder characterized by self-inflicted physical and mental harm. These actions are often negative responses to unrelenting disappointment, anger, and mental pain. And when Faker exhibited this behavior recently, it was clear that things had become serious.

Faker himself is a highly influential figure in the League of Legends community and Esports in general, as well as among the youth. Therefore, Faker’s emotional outburst is understandable, but it can also serve as a wake-up call for everyone. When Faker acted out, he had teammates and coaching staff around him to respond promptly. However, many individuals do not have anyone to intervene in time when they harm themselves.

Notably, the career of an Esports player or a professional League of Legends player typically involves teenagers aged 17 to 28. This is also the age where personality development and social awareness are gradually being perfected. The invisible pressures from glory or from the audience will certainly have a significant impact on these players’ mental health. In the past, there have been names who had to end their careers early due to not being able to withstand public pressure. Or they trained day and night to maintain their careers, only to suffer irreparable injuries.

Conclusion

Faker’s actions stem from multiple factors. However, the pressures of needing to win, performing well, along with his own mistakes likely account for the largest portion. Of course, Faker will return as he has countless times after previously falling. But whether Faker truly recovers mentally is probably something only he knows best.
